7 Career Insights from a Venture Capital Partner and Serial Entrepreneur | HireEdge Careers Unlocked

Nov 02, 2026

This post is part of our Careers Unlocked series, where we talk to professionals across industries about their career paths and advice for college students and grads entering the job market. Watch the full episode with Catherine Lee, partner at Top Corner Capital here: Catherine Lee on Careers Unlocked.

MIT engineering grad and Harvard MBA Catherine Lee started her career as an engineer before moving through strategy consulting at Bain & Company, private equity, and 14 years as a real estate entrepreneur. Today she's a partner at Top Corner Capital, a Silicon Valley venture debt firm she runs alongside her husband.

Here are seven takeaways from our conversation with her.

  1. Business school can reshape your entire trajectory. Lee calls her Harvard MBA the most transformative experience of her life — not just academically, but for the network and lifelong relationships it produced. She even met her husband and future business partner there.

  2. Being an entrepreneur also made her a better investor. After years advising and investing in other people's companies, Lee spent over a decade building her own real estate ventures. That firsthand experience with the highs and lows of founding a company, she says, is exactly what lets her relate to and mentor the founders she now backs.

  3. Debt can be a founder-friendly alternative to equity. Top Corner's core model offers early-stage companies venture debt instead of traditional equity investment, letting founders access capital for growth while giving up less ownership — something Lee compares to taking a mortgage on an appreciating home.

  4. Deal flow often comes down to relationships, not cold outreach. One of the firm's biggest early wins, an investment in quantum computing startup LightSync, came through a personal connection Lee made in her regular swim lane — a reminder, she says, that staying visible and in touch with your network can pay off in unexpected ways.

  5. Speed can be a competitive advantage for a small team. With only three people on staff, Top Corner can move fast where larger institutions can't. The team funded one loan in just 10 days when a company needed to move quickly on a major contract, something traditional banks typically can't match.

  6. Trust and character carry enormous weight in investment decisions. Lee says the firm's investment thesis is overwhelmingly about the people behind a company. Resilience, adaptability, and leadership matter as much as the business model. She's walked away from deals over something as simple as a founder who couldn't make eye contact.

  7. Your first job doesn't have to be loved — it has to be learned from. Lee's advice to graduates: stick with your first job long enough to actually build expertise, even if the hours are brutal, and treat your network as a long-term asset. Staying in touch with people and helping them when they ask, she says, tends to pay off years down the road.
